Egypt’s Vezeeta Launches Integrated ePharmacy Service for Prescription Medication

Following a year that saw it raise $40 million in funding, relocate to Dubai and expand into Africa, Vezeeta is wasting little time in pushing forward the healthtech sector in 2021.

Already considered one of the leading digital healthcare platforms in MENA’s expansive healthtech sector, Egypt’s Vezeeta has cemented its position with the launch of a new ePharmacy solution that will allow users to order prescription medications through its app.

The new service enables users to upload their e-prescriptions, add their insurance preference, choose cash or cashless payment options before checking out, and schedule same-day home deliveries in Cairo and Giza. The service can be integrated with teleconsultations, while providing round-the-clock access to pharmacists.

For founder and CEO, Amir Barsoum, the new offering is one part of Vezeeta’s ultimate goal of providing a 360° digital healthcare experience.

“We are after a delightful patient journey,” said Barsoum. “By offering our users the data to choose, and the right digital tools to transact, Vezeeta is, and will continue to empower its patients in every healthcare step. Today, we’re witnessing the golden era of Egyptian tech, and we aim to further the government’s tireless efforts to drive healthcare advancement and become frontrunners within the African continent. The ePharmacy launch is positioned to do just that.”

Vezeeta Pharmacy first launched in August, 2020, and was made possible by a Series D funding round of $40 million six months prior. That year also saw Vezeeta relocate its headquarters Dubai and expand into Kenya, with Nigeria on Barsoum’s radar for further expansion.

The ePharmacy is Vezeeta’s next logical evolution and, as was the case with doctors, integration and management is key.

“We first digitally integrated doctors within our healthcare ecosystem, and now we are doing the same for pharmacists.” said Maha Melhem, VP of ePharmacy, Vezeeta. “Our pharmacists receive excellent training and compensation to ensure a fulfilling experience for every user, every time they log onto the Vezeeta app. We adhere to strict hygiene standards through our unique high-quality packaging, and we make sure that patients can rely on us for the delivery of essential medications in 60-minutes or less.”

With plans to offer dosage and medication refill reminders and other features for chronic patients, there's still more room to evolve yet, setting the launch as another landmark moment for a remarkable rise for Vezeeta since launching in 2012. To date, the platform has served over 1 million patients in Cairo and Giza alone, with more cities set to be added.
