Following its debut last year, the African App Launchpad Cup has kicked-off its application phase for the 2020 edition, with $72,000 in prize money set to be handed out to this year’s winners.

Powered by Egypt’s Information Technology Industry Development Agency, the competition is open to startups from 21 African nations and will be split into two tracks: Game Development and App Development, each of which will award first, second and third placed startups with prizes of $12,000, $8,000 and $4,000 respectively, while 24 finalists will receive $1,000 each.

Equally as valuable to competing startups, the winner of each track will be given the chance to take their startup to the next level through a Microsoft-sponsored go-to-market programme, business planning training from GrindStone and access to VCs.

The launchpad was announced as part of the 2018 World Youth Forum, which took place in Sharm El Sheikh, and intends to build the capacity of African youth, while fast-tracking sustainable startups innovating app and game tech.

In the 2019 edition of the competition, the finals were held at annual entrepreneurial summit, RiseUp, with Algeria’s Boutia coming in at first place in the App Development Track and Egypt's Agora topping the Game Development Track.
