UK’s Statsbomb Completes Acquisition of Egyptian Football Data Startup ArqamFC

The sports analytics pioneer is growing its access while maintaining its internal process.

The football analytics regional pioneer — one of StartupScene’s 25 Under 25 for 2020 — has just finalised its acquisition deal by the UK’s Stasbomb. In the works for two years, the acquisition gives Arqam access to StatsBomb’s extensive network in Europe and the UK, while maintaining and growing its 100 member-strong regional team in Cairo.

Football is as much about data as athletic prowess. How many kilometres run, players’ shot-conversion rate, forward passes: everything collected on the field can be quantified, analysed, and fed back to optimise teams’ success.

For the past four years, the data startup has been collecting and analysing thousands of data points from football matches. It then packages the metrics into a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform that has built an international reputation for ArqamFC. Their client base now includes eight UEFA Champions League teams, including Paris Saint-Germain.

“I’ve always been interested in this intersection between data, tech and sports,” CEO and founder Aly Fakharany told StartupScene in January. “Our analysis team turns our data into football-specific lingo and metrics that are predictive and stable...to help football teams make smarter decisions, whether in their scouting or in their performance analysis.”
