Amazon has announced that it is set to launch Amazon.eg at an unspecified time later this year, with the ecommerce giant’s Seller Central, its management tool for digital merchants and vendors, is already up and running for Egyptian sellers to register and set up their stores.

Digital stores that were listed on Souq.com will also be able to move their operations to Amazon.eg, where they will have increased access to new features and the option to validate their account information.

“The introduction of Amazon Seller Central in Egypt is a key milestone in our journey to continue supporting local Egyptian businesses of all sizes, delivering greater opportunities to help them grow and connect with millions of customers,” said Omar Elsahy, the general manager of Amazon and Souq.com in Egypt.

The move follows similar efforts in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, where the online retail giant recently renamed its domain operations from Souq.com to Amazon.ae and Amazon.sa, respectively. Egypt and the two Gulf states account for 80% of the MENA region’s overall e-commerce market.

Over 50 percent of the products sold on Amazon globally are from small and medium-sized stores, making the e-commerce platform a key tool for discoverability for online vendors.

Since 2017, Amazon has been operating in Egypt as Souq.com after it acquired the e-commerce platform. Since then, the company has established a wide operations network in the country with a main fulfillment center, 15 delivery stations, and 3,000 employees.
