The 17 projects - spread across 22 locations - endeavor to buttress the national plan aimed at achieving Goal 2 of the UN SDGs, to improve food security.
Egypt’s Ministry of International Cooperation has reported that $486 million worth of funding from multilateral and bilateral development partners is being directed into 17 projects nationwide. These projects—spread across 22 locations—endeavor to buttress the national plan aimed at achieving Goal 2 of the United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Zero hunger by improving food security.
In accordance with the ministry’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) - SDG map, the financing available for achieving the goal includes $112 million of non-refundable grants, as well as $374 million of funding secured from 11 development partners including the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED), and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
Keeping in line with Egypt’s agenda pertaining to the eradication of hunger, the U.S. has granted $72.5 million to the Ministry of Agriculture to implement the Agribusiness Development project. This project aims to rev up Egypt’s economic competitiveness and promote inclusivity by encouraging growth in specific agricultural fields. It also aims to enhance engagement in the private sector, develop agricultural products, farming productivity, and crop marketing.
In addition to these SDG 2-focused projects and initiatives, the Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities is also avidly working on realising other SDGs, including SDG 8, pertaining to Decent Work and Economic Grow, and SDG 17, which is concerned with revitalising the global partnership for sustainable development.
