AUC's Entrepreneurs' Society Is Hosting the Very First Fishackathon In Cairo

The startup initiative is bringing the Canada-based initiative to Egypt, challenging participants to develop sustainable solutions in just 28 hours.

For the first time ever, Canada-based HackerNest has partnered with AUC's Entrepreneurs' Society to host Fishackathon in Cairo, at AUC New Cairo's premises to bring their annual Fishackathon; an annual event motivated by the will to improve humanity and economic prosperity taking over more than 65 cities around the world. Backed by the US Department of State, Fishackathon's goal is to address global sustainable fisheries challenges through the use of technological solutions.

In just 28 hours, teams will be develop a practical and creative solution to one of three problems: sustainability (overfishing, pollution, and other hazards threatening the extinction of marine species), enforcement (the lack of resources), and marketplace (poor data access puts small players at a disadvantage and hinders firms from making smart, socially responsible decisions). The event will kick off on February 2nd at the AUC, and here's the fun part: the local winner not only gets $1000, but also gets to compete at a regional and then global level. But other than monetary prizes, city winners will get mentoring by industry experts and opportunities at local incubators and accelerators to drive their solutions forward.

"For the perfect chemistry, the team of five would essentially include a developer, a business-mindset, a science-expert, a designer and a strategist," Salma Fishier,  ES' Vice President for Strategic Affairs says. "Together, with their diverse backgrounds and interests, the team would develop a solution that will create a lasting impact, " she adds. But that's not all: there are no age requirements or educational prerequisites to enter the hackathon, it's a one-size-fits-all kind off competition.
